STUDENT VISA PROGRAM
The Student visa program allows people who are not Australian Citizens or Permanent Residents to study in Australia. The program was restructured with effect from 1 July 2001. The "one student visa subclass" was changed to "one student visa class with 8 visa subclasses". 7 of the visa subclasses relate to specific educational sectors. The student visa subclasses are as follows:
1. Subclass 570 Independent ELICOS sector visa
This visa is for students who wish to undertake ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students) as a stand-alone course, and not as a prerequisite to commencing another course (for example, a degree course).
2. Subclass 571 Schools sector visa
This visa is for students who will be studying at school. This visa subclass covers courses at primary school, secondary school (including junior and senior secondary) and secondary exchange programs.
3. Subclass 572 Vocational education and training sector visa
This is for people who wish to undertake study and training leading to a vocational qualification. The visa subclass covers courses like Certificate I, II, III and IV; Diploma and Advanced Diploma; Advanced Certificate; and Associate Diploma
4. Subclass 573 Higher education sector visa
The courses that are acceptable for this visa are Bachelor degree, Graduate certificate, and Graduate diploma.
5. Subclass 574 Postgraduate research sector visa
For this visa, the following acceptable courses are Masters degree by coursework or by research, and a Doctoral degree. Students who are no longer enrolled in their postgraduate course but are required by their education provider to remain in Australia during the marking of their thesis may also apply for this visa. A visa granted in this situation will allow the holder to stay in Australia for a maximum period of 6 months, unless there are exceptional reasons for extending that period.
6. Subclass 575 Non - award sector visa
This visa is for people wishing to do foundation, bridging or other courses that do not lead to the award of a degree, diploma or other formal award.
7. Subclass 576 Aus AID or Defence sector visa
This visa is designed for international students who are sponsored by AusAID or Defence to study a full-time course of any type in Australia. The student must have the written approval of the AusAID Minister or Defence Minister.
8. Subclass 580 Student Guardian visa
This visa is for foreign nationals applying to stay in Australia as the guardian of a student who is studying in Australia. International students studying in Australia on a student visa may require a guardian if they are under 18 years of age. There may also be exceptional circumstances where a student over 18 years of age may need a guardian for religious or cultural reasons.
