LONG TERM BENEFIT: Migrating to Australia permanently

Once you have completed a registered course and met the two-year study requirement in Australia, you may be eligible to apply for a Skilled Permanent Residency Visa under the Graduate Overseas Student Subclass. This will entitle you to permanent residency and consequently to unrestricted work rights in Australia. Your Australian qualification will allow you to claim extra points in the Skilled Visa Points test. Applicants who have completed an Australian doctorate as a result of at least 2 years' study in Australia will now be eligible for 25 points. Applicants must complete a minimum of 3 years study in Australia that has resulted in the applicant completing a Bachelor with Honours to be eligible for 15 points. Any applicant who has one or more Australian degrees, diplomas or trade qualifications and who meets the minimum 2 years study requirement will continue to be eligible for 5 points. If you study for an Australian bachelor degree or higher qualification (the result of 2 years full-time study in Australia) then you may be able to nominate of a 60-point occupation from the Skilled Occupations List (SOL) and be able to remain in Australia after completion of your course and lodge a skilled visa application.

Please note that some applicants who have just completed studies in Australia do not have to satisfy the requirement of having employment experience in a skilled occupation. To obtain the benefit of the exemption, the applicants must make their skilled visa application within 6 months of the completion of their degree, diploma or trade qualification in Australia and they must provide satisfactory evidence that a relevant assessing authority has assessed their skills for their nominated occupation. If your skills assessment processing is likely to take longer than the expiry date of your student visa you can apply for a Graduate Skilled Temporary Visa which will keep you in lawful status. The cost for a Permanent Visa application is between AUD$1,000 and AUD$4,500(Approx).
