General Skilled Migration
The General Skilled Migration program is for people who are not sponsored by an employer and who have skills in particular occupations required in Australia. Applicants must be over 18 and under 45 years of age, with good English language ability, and recent skilled work experience unless they recently completed an eligible Australian qualification. Applicants must also have skills and qualifications for an occupation listed on Australia's Skilled Occupation List. From 1 September 2007, the Department of Immigration has implemented changes to the General Skilled Migration programme. In order to be eligible under the Skilled Migration programme, the visa applicant must meet the following basic requirements: -
Age
The applicant must be under 45 years of age at the time of application.
English Language
The main applicant will need to demonstrate that they have competent English (minimum score of 6.0 in each component of IELTS), or a vocational level of English if they have nominated a Trade occupation (minimum score of 5.0 in each component of IELTS). Applicants can also be awarded additional points for obtaining a proficient level of English, being a score of at least seven in each if the bands on the IELTS exam.
Qualifications
The applicant must have post secondary qualifications such as a university degree, diploma or a trade qualification. The applicant's skills must also be assessed by the relevant assessing authority as suitable for the applicant's nominated occupation.
Nominated Occupation
The applicant must nominate an occupation which is listed on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) at the time of application. The nominated occupation must be aligned with the applicant's qualifications and work experience.
Recent Work Experience
The applicant must be able to demonstrate that they have worked in paid employment in a skilled occupation (any skilled occupation on the SOL) for at least 12 of the 24 months immediately before application.
Skill Assessment
The applicant must have received a suitable skill assessment from the relevant Australian assessing authority for their nominated occupation. Skilled occupations must be assessed by an organization gazetted to assess an applicant's skill (the "relevant assessing authority"). The gazetted skilled occupations list specifies the relevant assessing authorities and can be found in form 1121i published by the Department of Immigration and available on its website.
